Emotional support is the interaction between people, which includes the expression of affection, affirmation of behaviors, and interpersonal mutual help.

A person with adequate mental health can respond to the different demands of life in harmony with the environment, as described by the Ministry of Health of our country.

The recognition of emotions is essential for an adequate accompaniment of the elderly at home. Emotions are psychophysiological reactions that represent ways of adaptation to certain stimuli of the individual, when he/she perceives an object or a person. Likewise, to a place, an event or an important memory.

That is why it is essential to know the basic emotions, which may include:

  1. Anger
  2. Fear
  3. Joy
  4. Sadness
  5. Disgust

On the other hand, feelings tend to be more lasting than emotions and are linked to reflection. These are divided, according to the presentation of nurse Stephanie Román Taylor, a specialist in Mental Health and Psychiatry, as follows:

"We usually ask, or are asked, how are you, and the answer is always well. But we are not giving the space to talk about feelings. That is why we need to recognize them and give them a name," explained Román.

How do we achieve this?

Through emotional education, and this starts with the recognition of our own emotions. This is the only way we can empathetically identify the emotions of others, and prevent the harmful effects of red light, and develop self-motivation skills.

Another tip that the specialist gave us was to use the "refrain of assertiveness", which consists of saying: "I feel... when... because... and I would like to..."; in this way, we complement the feelings present at that moment so that others can understand us better, and thus achieve a fluid communication.
