Hip replacement is a medical procedure aimed at improving the quality of life of people who suffer from hip joint problems. Dr. Oscar Oeding, specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology, tells us.
Hip replacement is a surgery in which the damaged or worn out hip joint is replaced by an artificial prosthesis. This intervention is commonly recommended for patients who experience chronic pain, limited mobility and difficulty in carrying out daily activities due to diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral head or severe hip fractures.
The hip replacement procedure usually requires the patient to undergo a preoperative evaluation by the treating physician. Prior to surgery, the patient undergoes medical examinations and evaluations to determine the patient's overall health status, identify potential risks and plan the procedure accordingly.
On the day of surgery, the surgeon makes an incision in the hip to access the joint. This incision can vary in size and location, depending on the surgical technique used and the patient's specific needs.
The artificial prosthesis is inserted into the hip socket and attached to the remaining bone. The prosthesis may be composed of a combination of metal, plastic and ceramic components designed to mimic the structure and function of the natural joint.
Recovery and rehabilitation, according to Dr. Oeding, after surgery, the patient is transferred to a recovery room where post-operative care is provided, the patient's condition is monitored and the rehabilitation process begins. Rehabilitation includes physical therapy and exercises to strengthen the surrounding muscles and restore hip function and mobility.
It is important to note that hip replacement is a complex procedure that requires the expertise of a specialized medical team. Each patient is evaluated on an individual basis and a customized treatment plan is developed according to their specific needs.
