Taking care of your health is a priority, and that is why Dr. Gabriela Sandí, microbiologist at Clínica Bíblica's Clinical Laboratory, tells you in the following video about the lipid profile and how to prepare for the test.

What is a Lipid Profile?

The lipid profile is a set of tests that evaluate the levels of fats in the blood. These fats, also known as lipids, include cholesterol and triglycerides. It is essential to measure these levels because an imbalance can increase the risk of heart disease and other health problems.

How to Prepare for the Test

It is vital to prepare properly to get accurate results. Here are some tips:

  • Fasting: Most of the time, you perform the lipid test on an empty stomach. This means you should refrain from eating or drinking (except water) for at least 9-12 hours before the test.

  • Medications: Inform the physician of any medications being taken, as some may affect the results.

  • Hydration: Drinking water is allowed, even recommended! Staying hydrated is fine, but avoid other beverages, such as juices or coffee, which can affect the results.
Why is it important to have a lipid profile study?

A lipid profile provides crucial information about cardiovascular health. If the results indicate elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels, your doctor may suggest dietary changes, exercise or medications to reduce the risk of heart disease among others.
