Diabetes is a disorder of glucose metabolism characterized by chronic hyperglycemia (high blood sugar); this means that the functioning to regulate blood sugar is not adequate.
Diabetes can be triggered by medications, genetic conditions, hormonal or infectious diseases, or diabetes that occurs during pregnancy (gestational).
If you have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, don't worry, but get busy; you can learn to live with the disease by following these tips.
- Eat well: maintain a balanced, adequate and individualized diet.
- Stay active: park your car away from driveways, or get out one stop earlier to walk more. Use the stairs. Exercise at home when watching TV.
- Have medical check-ups: biannual, lipids, foot check-up, visit the ophthalmologist once a year, complete vaccination schedule, kidney function.
- Respect the schedule of meals: skipping meals, or eating without having an established schedule can affect the regulation of your body.
"This is not a death sentence, it is a condition with which you can live for many, many years and have a completely normal life," explained Dr. Laura Ulate, specialist in Endocrinology at Clínica Bíblica.
