Dr. Dennis Rivera Melo, specialist in Peripheral Vascular at Clínica Bíblica, Santa Ana, comments on this annoying vascular disease in veins, arteries and lymphatic tissue, both in men and women of different ages.

What does vascular disease refer to?

According to Dr. Rivera, the most common is venous disease, varicose veins. These are abnormal dilatations of the veins in any part of the human body; however, the most frequent ones are found in the lower extremities, that is to say, in the legs. For the doctor to define it as a varicose vein, it must present that bulge in the leg.

In order to be diagnosed, it is important that the patient sees a peripheral vascular specialist and undergoes a series of preliminary studies, in addition to a clinical evaluation. Thus, it is determined if it is really a varicose vein and its degree, since the treatment of the disease depends on this.

Dr. Rivera indicates that a skin hydrated with water and moisturized with moisturizing cream is a healthy skin and prevents the formation of varicose veins. However, when varicose veins already exist, they are treated according to their degree.

For example, the use of elastic stockings is an important basis for any treatment; another treatment is to place phlebotonics, these drugs promote venous circulation and prevent inflammation of the venous circulation.

As a last treatment option, surgery is given, which can be performed in several ways, for example:

  • Conventional saphenectomy, which is when the patient has incisions made in the skin.
  • Endovenous ablation, which is known as "laser", the skin does not receive incisions and, aesthetically, does not leave marks.
